The Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations serves Duke University's dynamic educational, intellectual and service missions by providing honest, timely and useful information to all of its internal and external stakeholders and audiences, and by helping the university understand, anticipate and manage its environment.

While coordinating and managing communications strategies with the university's many audiences, the Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations includes offices responsible for federal, state and local government relations, local community affairs, campus news and communications and photographic services:
  • Office of News and Communications
    Works with the news media and others to highlight the activities of Duke's faculty, students and staff, both locally and throughout the world. Oversees Duke's top-level Web pages. Provides strategic counsel to Duke community on effective communication.

  • University Photography
    Documents the people and programs of Duke University, providing high-quality images for departments, special events, sports programs, the news media and others.

  • Federal Relations
    Represents Duke University in Washington, D.C., on legislative and regulatory matters of interest to Duke.

  • Office of Community Affairs
    Represents Duke University's interests with Durham city and county governments. Coordinates the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership, which focuses on improving the quality of life in the 12 neighborhoods near Duke's campus and on boosting student achievement in the seven public schools that serve these neighborhoods.

  • Government Relations
    Represents the Duke University Health System on federal matters in Washington, D.C., and Duke and DUHS on state matters in Raleigh, N.C., the state capital. Also supports the DUHS agenda on local and regulatory matters.
